Job Duties

1.       Greet clients as they arrive and offer them refreshments
2.       Prep clients for their haircut and ask what type of styling they want
3.       Cut and style clients’ hair to their specifications
4.       Engage in friendly conversation with clients
5.       Keep your station, tools, and equipment sanitized and in good condition
6.       Ensure you have the proper products in stock for future clients
7.       Welcome customers and identify their preferences by asking pointed questions
8.       Recommend hairstyles and haircuts according to customers’ face shapes and tastes
9.       Wash, rinse and dry clients’ hair using appropriate shampoos and conditioners (e.g. for oily hair or dry scalp)
10.    Cut, trim and shave hair using professional equipment
11.    Apply a wide range of hair coloring techniques, like highlights, ombre and balayage
12.    Create hairstyles for formal events and everyday looks, including braids, ponytails and buns
13.    Apply hair treatment products, as needed (e.g. color protection creams and hydrating masks)
14.    Form bonds with loyal customers and remember their hairstyle preferences
15.    Manage bookings and serve walk-ins
16.    Ensure tidiness of beauty stations and sterilize tools, as needed
17.    Cross-sell hair care products or services, when appropriate

Education Requirement

Hairstylists
  1. Some secondary school education is required.
  2. Completion of a two- or three-year hairstyling apprenticeship program or completion of a college or other program in hairstyling combined with on-the-job training is usually required.
  3. Several years of experience may replace formal education and training.
  4. Employers may require applicants to provide a hairstyling demonstration before being hired.
  5. Trade certification for hairstylists is compulsory in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, and available, but voluntary, in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, British Columbia, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
  6. Red Seal endorsement is also available to qualified hairstylists upon successful completion of the interprovincial Red Seal examination.
Barbers
  1. Some secondary school education is required.
  2. Completion of a two-year apprenticeship or other barber program is usually required.
  3. On-the-job training may be substituted for formal education.
  4. Trade certification for barbers is compulsory in Ontario and available, but voluntary, in the Yukon.
