Job Profile Detail

Opticians fit clients with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, assist clients in the selection of eyeglass frames, arrange for the production of eyeglasses or contact lenses and mount lenses in eyeglass frames. They are employed in optical retail outlets or other establishments with optical dispensing departments, or they may be self-employed. Student opticians and opticians who are managers of optical retail outlets are included in this unit group.

Job Duties

1.       Obtaining patient prescriptions from Optometrists and Ophthalmologists.
2.       Taking customer information and measurements of the ocular area.
3.       Recommending frames or contact lenses that suit the customer's style, face, and specifications.
4.       Adjusting and fitting frames according to the prescriptions and customer's specifications, as well as to suit the customer's face.
5.       Preparing work orders for the Optical Technicians to use to manufacture the lenses.
6.       Using specialized equipment, such as calipers, lensometers, and lens guages.
7.       Keeping inventory on frames and contact lenses to ensure product variety and customer satisfaction.
8.       Repairing broken frames.
9.       Educating customers on how to wear and maintain glasses and contact lenses.
10.    Performing administrative duties, such as managing prescriptions, customer records, and insurance.

Education Requirement

1.       Completion of a two- or three-year college program in ophthalmic dispensing or optical sciences is required.
2.       Licensing by a regulatory body for opticians is required in all provinces.
3.       Licensing requirements for scope of practice and protected titles related to dispensing and contact lens certification vary by province.
